After crap weather for the past 2 days, the sun shone and the skies looked epic so Merthyr was chosen over the Blorenge. Task was set 75k to Highnam a few miles to the W of Gloucester as it was the last day. The good guys once again took of early and left in a weak climb. Conditions were looking a bit iffy and a few people went down. I managed to stay up for 45 mins or so before top landing again as things quitened down.
Thermal activity picked up again and I was soon in the air making the most of the weak climbs and eventually let the hill with a few others in the weak climb.
Got to cloudbase and headed slightly upwind of the course as I knew I would drift offline with the NW drift of the thermals.
It was great fun and got a few more weak climbs as I headed over the Welsh mining valleys. Once I passed the hills onto the flats, DIdn't find any climbs and headed towards the A40 as I was getting low. Scraped around a bit in zeros which lead to nothing and eventually landed next to the main road a few miles SE of Abergavenny to make a credible distance of 30K.
Thn had the fun of the retrieve so eventually hitched into Abergavenny, picked up someones car and drove to GLoucester to pick Steve and Duncan who had made it to goal. Then drove back to Crickhowell to get the flights vrified from our GPS's and Duncan gave us a lift back to Merthyr to collect our cars which we feared would be torched by the troublesome locals.
Got our cars safely down the hill again and then I had to collect my glider which was in a field in the middle of nowhere.
By the time the glider was on my car, it was midnight and I had a 4 hour drive back to Lancashire so got home for 5ish. Very tirin day but had a great flight. As good as it gets in the UK although just wish I coulda flown further and caught a few more thermals!! Superb eventful day
